Charles William Rumbelow was born in Wicken on 21st April 1897, (Newmarket Q2-1897 3B:520), baptised in Wicken St Lawrence on 30th May 1897, son of George and Laura Mary
RUMBELOW (née MACE).
1901 census...Aged 3, he was at Drury Lane, Wicken, with his father George RUMBELOW [24] farm labourer; his mother Laura Maria [28] born Tuddenham; brothers Claude Henry [2] and Lawrence George [7 months). All, except his mother, were born in Wicken. 1911 census...Aged 13, a scholar, he was at Butts Lane, Wicken, with his widowed grandmother Emma RUMBELOW [71] born Wicken. His parents were also n Butts Lane, Wicken with his brothers Claude and Lawrence, also brother Thomas [7] and Agnes [2], both born in Wicken. His nephew Claude Walter George RUMBELOW died in Germany in 1945. see here |

He enlisted in Newmarket in June 1916.
He is not recorded on "Soldiers Died" nor does he appear to have a medal card but the medal rolls show the British War Medal and Victory medal, indicating that he must have served abroad. His Army records have not been found so the only other record of his death is the "Soldier's Personal Effects" roll which states he died in Birmingham ( quite possibly Charles W.Rumbelow, Birmingham Q2-1917 6D:223).
